    Positives about this game:

-Supports Driving Force Wheel (A wheel is HIGHLY recommended)
    -Graphics are superb
    -The tracks are well represented
-The difficulty level is greatly adjustable
    -All the drivers are represented
-Team cars perform to real-life standards
(Cars top speeds, handling, and rate of failure are realistic)
    -Interactive Pit stops

    Negatives about this game:

-No launch control (This is CRITICAL to F1)
-No limiter when using Interactive Pit option
-No clear definitions of FIA rules (Again this is CRITICAL)

Additions I would like to see:

-More pre- and post- race fanfare
-Launch Control (Can be supported with Driving Force Wheel)
-Limiter (Also can be supported with D.F. Wheel)
-Better view selection (The first person cockpit view is too low)
-Team Creation Feature (I would like to create my own team)

    Comments:

This game is the best simulation of F1 racing I have yet to encounter. EA went out of there way to bring the finer points of the real F1 teams and tracks into this game. The cars are not equal. By far Ferrari, and even more, M. Schumacher, has the best performing car on the track. Do not expect to beat him on even a medium difficult setting, in a car such as a Jordan or an Arrows, without driving an exceptional race. This may not seem fair, as the handicap makes the other teams seem less desireable, but as a F1 simulator this is spot on. Williams and McLaren offer the best opposition to the Ferrari cars. The tracks are very realistic in their layout, the cars scream as they climb hills, slide as the rain begins to pool on the pavement, and the roar of the crowd swells as you approach the grandstands. This game offers a wide range of difficulty, so those who wish for a car that cannot be damaged in a crash, doesn’t spin out, does not have to obey the rules of the FIA, and can overtake all opposition, this game can satisfy that. Yet, if skill, strategy, and practice are what make the game satisfying, this game can be just what the that Formula One fan desires. I take full advantage of the hour long practice session to learn each track, then it takes multiple qualifying laps to earn a solid pole position. I fine tune the car setups during the practice laps just before the race, and fight it out with both the track, and the other drivers, for the full duration of the race, hands clenched tightly on my Driving Force Wheel. This is what I was looking for when I bought this game, and I am satisfied to say that I found it.

  2. Being a huge F1 fan, this game met my lofty expectations. This has the current season, more additions to it, and very good realism and graphics. A big question of yours is probably how does it differ from F1 2001, and is it worth it to buy it when I own last year’s? Well, let me list the additions.

First of all, this game is definetly not WORSE than last years, it only gets better. In F1 2001, you would see people like Nick Heidfeld or Eddie Irvine beating Michael Schumacher or David Coulthard. Not very realistic. They improved this greatly, and now you see the first three rows made up of Williams, Ferrari, and McClaren. There’s a new feature which enables you to use the slipstream and get by the driver in front of you, which is both very useful, and very cool to do! Once you have the draft you hear this whooshing sound and your vision becomes slightly blurred and bouncy as you speed past Montoya on the curved banking of Indianapolis! There are these EA Sports cards which have different challenges you must do in order to recieve them. For each team, there are 6 categories of cards : Milestone, Racing, Endurance, Basic Challenge, Advanced Challenge, and..i forgot.hehe. But as the team gets better, there get harder to get. For example, the Toyota team rewards you a card for Endurance for completing an 8 lap race. Ferrari makes you run a full season under full laps in order to get their’s. Graphics have improved as well in this game compared to last year’s.

So interperet this information as you see it worthy of buying this game, but for me, a 2001 owner, the additions were worth the spending of 50 dollars again.

Hope this was of help, and GO RALF SCHUMACHER!!

  3. This game is one of the best I’ve seen ever. The realism that the EA team put into this game is amazing. The track details, each car is designed according to its real performance (even if Toyota is doing better than expected), the sounds, the graphics and so many other things are the ultimate state of art in gaming. But most of all I believe that this game offers great experience for all, beginners and pros. Drive in Arcade mode (Normal mode) and learn all the tracks winning with a bit of effort but enough to get glued to F1. If you are a more experienced guy drive in simulation mode and make it as tough as you want. This game is to get into it and challenge yourself every time you play. You won’t master it in a weekend time and personally speaking it makes it more interesting. I don’t agree with the guy ( Irespect his opinion tough) that gave this game one star, I’m sure he was playing the easiest level. So if you’re a tough guy (girl) buy this game and learn to race like the best. The EA Cards you win are greatly designed to keep you playing no matter if you are in a low, mid or high level of racing. One final advice, play it using the Logitech Force Feedback wheel, it really close the gap to the real experience. I’ve been to the Interlagos track and it’s wonderful how close to the reality the EA guys made it in this game. I’d give this game a six (6) star qualification but there are just five so!

I just purchased F1 2002, a Playstation 2, and a Logitech Force Feedback wheel so I could play this racing simulator. The game, on full simulator setting, is very hard because it’s phenomenally realistic. It took me a few HOURS just to be able to drive a full lap on one circuit without crashing. I’m an avid F1 fan and I feel certain that the difficulty is very realistic. The graphics are good, the sound is accurate, and the tracks are beautiful. It will not satisfy people who want to keep their right foot to the floor while they blow past everyone on the track because that’s just not how F1 cars handle. However, if you want a true simulator of a Formula One car, this game has it!

Incidentally, I personally drive sports cars on a few local tracks each year (Watkins Glen, Pocono, Limerock, etc.), so I have a particularly discerning eye for realism in this game. It’s the only game I own for the PS2, and I’d highly recommend it for the die hard F1 fan. Everyone else should find a more arcade style title.

I held back one star, for the same reason I would hold back a star for every version of F1 going back to the N64 and PS. Challange mode and customizable drivers/teams and advancements.

Graphics, game play, feel and the overall experience is great in F1 2002. It’s like going from the stands into the car! But to understand why I only gave this game 4 stars, we have to go back to 1989 (?) I think, and Formula One by Sega for the Genesis. For F1 fans of the time (and there weren’t many in the states) this game had everything, even graphics for period. But the thing I liked the best was I could put my own name in the game, creating a new driver (me) and start out at the bottom (C class on team Sauber). To work your way up to the cream of the crop (“A” class with Williams etc.) you had to win races. When you gained a certain number points in the standings, better teams would lure you away, offering you a chance to race for them in higher classes and better cars. After you won it all in the first season and thought you had the game down, season 2 came along and kicked your arse! When you start season two, the first race, you find that the guy who finished 2nd in the first season really has a chubby on to beat you. Basically, the game difficulty went up a notch after you beat it the first time.

EA, PLEASE PLAY THAT OLD SEGA GAME AND BRING BACK THOSE GREAT FEATURES. Anyway, F1 2002 is recomended for hard core and leisure F1 fans alike, with arcade or true simulation modes available. Try running a full race (meaning the actual number of laps in a real race), in full sim mode. You’ll be putting band-aids on thumbs for padding to play anything after that. I especially like the fact that FIA rules can be turned on and enforced. One of my favorite and dissapointing moments was winning the Brazilian GP, with full laps on, only to find out I was DQ’d at the end of the race for passing off the track and really didn’t win. One last suggestion, FIA rules are not included in the manuel, so you should look at them on-line or at the book store so you fully understand them before you turn them on.
